SXSW 2009 wrap-up

I’ve been trying to figure out how to sum up SXSW 2009 since I got back, and I’m still not sure I can do it. It was a much different week for me this year than it has been in the past, due I’m sure to all the personal changes I’ve been through in the last year. I have been in a weird space since I moved to Wilmington— not sure where I am professionally and isolated from my friends. I kind of detached myself from the Web world during the move, and I haven’t been able to figure out where to enter back into it. And to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to. So my goal for SXSW this year wasn’t to party and meet folks that inspire me and learn and get new ideas, it was to give a shit about the …More »

Thanks, Ada

I think Matto has said it best for me today:

I have it on decent authority that the world is full of women who kick ass in Tech. You might know one. Go find one today and thank her.

Due to other plans I have for today, which …More »

Margarita on the Rocks

OMG, did she actually post?

Yes. Yes she did.

It has been so damn long that I feel like I sould be writing something deep and earth shattering, but I don’t have it in me. I decided I just needed to get this return-from-the-dead post out the door so I can stop feeling like a …More »

Jangly Ganglia

Par-tay

Had a great party at A & J’s— the pepperoni rolls were a hit, and it was great to see folks I haven’t seen forever. Also, it was dogtastic, which is never a bad thing.

If you’re confused as I was about when to use

vs.
when coding an HTML5 document, this article by Oli Studholme will help clear things up.

To decide which of these three elements is appropriate, first think if the enclosed content would make sense on it’s own in a feed reader—if so use

. If that’s not the case, is the enclosed content related? If so use
. Finally if there’s no semantic meaning use
. Except for occasional use to provide a hook for styles, I expect the humble
will mostly be superseded by
, and where required more specialised HTML5 elements.

"The most important thing to recognize here is that, whether we like it or not, seventy-three million people are playing Farmville: a boring, repetitive, and potentially dangerous activity that barely qualifies as a game. Seventy-three million people are obligated to a company that holds no reciprocal ethical obligation toward those people."

This is such a good idea— map, schedule, planner, notebook for SXSW all in one. Make it fit in my purse, and I’d pay good money for it.

I think he hits on the head here— throwaway books will go digital, nicer books with definite form will stay books for a while.
