Miami-based BLU Products is quite known for its unlocked mid-range smartphones. Last year it dabbled a bit in the premium market with all-metal designs. Now it’s going back to its roots but with a little twist. The BLU Tank Xtreme 5.0 is undeniably on the low end of the spectrum, but it has one thing that is it rivals on that tier can only dream of: rugged features usually found only on more expensive models.
BLU’s latest smartphone looks like it can really take a beating, as it is features a shock absorbent rubber frame. This should greatly reduce the possibility of damaging it if you accidentally drop it on the floor. Repeatedly. It’s IP65 rating isn’t exactly the highest, though it does excel in the dustproof department. You would, however, be hardpressed to find a similar score on smartphones at this price level.
Its specs, however, won’t blow your socks off. The new Tank Xtreme 5.0 is essentially an entry-level smartphone that comes with a 5-inch HD screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top. It is powered by the MediaTek 6580 quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow. We know: a tank is powered by Marshmallow.
The device is equipped with a 5MP primary camera and a selfie snapper that also sports a 5MP sensor. Its robust body houses a 3,000 mAh battery that, according to manufacturer, should keep lights on for up to 2.5 days. There’s just 8 GB of storage available, but you are able to expand it for an additional 64 GB with a microSD card.
If you want the latest and greatest from Google, however, it’s doubtful you will settle for the Tank Xtreme 5.0. Rather, you will want this phone for its rugged and affordable nature. Speaking of the latter, this phone is currently available through Amazon for $130 unlocked, but keep in mind the smartphone will only work on GSM carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, and others.
